Grounds and gardens
The estate of Milner Field was bounded by the Gilstead Road to the west and north, by the River Aire to the south and reached the outskirts of Shipley in the east.
The parkland and formal gardens were designed and laid out by Robert Marnock, one of the most eminent garden designers of his day. He was also responsible for the design of the hothouses, greenhouses and kitchen gardens.
The remains of this extensive collection of buildings and glasshouses still exists (although now in a ruinous and dangerous condition) two hundred meters north of the site of Milner Field.
In addition to rearing exotic plants and shrubs these gardens would have kept the house supplied virtually year round with fresh fruit, flowers and vegetables.
